Use Catalogs During Application Development

Stewardship Tier catalogs provide a means to populate and administer translations, help text and alias values at the page, WebApp and system levels.

When phrases on a page are translated, Stewardship Tier searches through catalogs in the following order:

  • Page-specific Catalogs – Catalogs that exist for a given page. Translations, help text and alias values in these types of catalog are only applicable for the one page to which the catalog is linked.This is the first level the Stewardship Tier searches for a phrase translation.
  • WebApp Catalogs – Catalogs are applied to one or many WebApps. Translations, help text and alias values found in these catalogs apply to all pages in a WebApp to which it is assigned. If multiple catalogs are assigned to a WebApp, the Stewardship Tier searches through all the WebApp catalogs, starting with the catalog with the lowest priority value first. If all WebApp catalogs are searched and a phrase translation has not been found, the Stewardship Tier searches through the custom system catalog.

  • Custom System Catalog - A catalog that applies defined translation to the entire system. The Stewardship Tier is delivered with a default .System catalog (that does not support custom phrase translations); however, a custom system catalog can be created as a translation layer between the WebApp and the .System catalog. If a phrase translation has not been found in the custom system catalog, the Stewardship Tier searches through the .System catalog for a translation. `

  • The .System Catalog – The delivered system catalog is the default system catalog. The .System catalog is the last catalog searched for a phrase translation. If a custom system catalog is created and assigned to the system, and if a translation has not been found in the custom system catalog, the Stewardship Tier searches through the .System catalog for a translation.

It is recommended to translate phrases at the most generic level appropriate. The higher the level the phrase is translated, the more useful the translation will be. For example, a phrase translated in a catalog at the WebApp level can be reused by many WebApps and many pages. A phrase translated in a catalog at the page level is only good for that single page.

There are cases where a Phrase has a unique meaning on a page, different from its usual meaning, and should be translated at the page level. However, page level translation should be the exception to the rule.
